About MATpulse
MATpulse integrates six government data sources into unified profiles for every school and academy trust in England. Financial data from the DfE's Academies Accounts Return and Consistent Financial Reporting, Ofsted inspection outcomes, KS2 and KS4 academic performance, School Workforce Census data, pupil absence statistics, and Companies House corporate records — joined, cleaned, and presented in one place.
The platform exists because this data is public but fragmented. Understanding a single school's position currently requires navigating GIAS, the Financial Benchmarking and Insights Tool, Compare School Performance, the School Workforce Census, Ofsted reports, and Companies House separately. Understanding a trust's position is harder still, requiring aggregation across dozens of member schools. MATpulse does this aggregation automatically.
Data sources and integrity
All data is sourced under the Open Government Licence v3.0 from the Department for Education, the Education and Skills Funding Agency, Ofsted, and Companies House. Every metric on the site is traceable to its official source. Where data is suppressed by the DfE (for small cohorts or statistical disclosure), MATpulse shows a dash rather than imputing values.
Derived metrics — such as the key indicators highlighting where staff costs exceed the DfE's 78% review threshold or reserves fall below 5% — reference published DfE thresholds. These are contextual reference points, not judgements. Whether a metric warrants action depends on the school's specific circumstances, SEND provision, staffing model, and strategic priorities.
Who this is for
MATpulse is built for people who need to understand how schools and trusts are performing across multiple dimensions: governors and trustees conducting oversight or due diligence, school leaders preparing for Ofsted or benchmarking against peers, education journalists investigating trust-level patterns, and researchers studying the academy sector.
What MATpulse is not
MATpulse is not financial advice. It is not a school recommender for parents (we have no catchment or admissions data). It does not produce league tables that rank schools by quality — the data is presented for informed interpretation, not for ranking.
